Trauma and rebirth - etch print triptych
Joe is an Ōtautahi based Ngāi Tahu artist born, raised, and still living in New Brighton. Graduating with a Master's in Visual Art in 2021, Joe has been involved in many exhibitions and events all over Aotearoa. While primarily a printmaker, specifically woodblock, Joe has expanded his skill set into acrylic and watercolour painting and more recently typography and street art. Thematically, Joe's usual focus is on the world of horror and the macabre though recently he has been exploring his Ngāi Tahu roots and has started incorporating Te Reo and themes of atua into his work. Combining Joe's Māori heritage and passion for street art has opened new avenues for him in the world of art.
As part of The White Room Joe says, “I love the art and the people who come here. Everyone works away all day and it’s obvious they love it”. This has opened a new world for Joe, allowing him to work with people with diverse ways of communicating, through the shared medium of art. Speaking to the friendships formed in The White Room, he says “I really love the banter between the artists”.
